Ingredients
1lb ground beef or Italian sausage
1 Tbs olive oil
1 28 oz can diced tomatoes
1 12 oz can tomato paste
1 Tbs sugar
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1 1/2 tsp table salt
1 bay leaf
2 eggs
1 15 oz container of ricotta cheese
1 16 oz package of mozzarella cheese, shredded
10 oz lasagna noodes
Directions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium high heat, add ground beef and onion
- After the meat and onion is cooked, add garlic and cook for one minute
- Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, red pepper, salt and bay leaf. Heat the mixture until it boils, reduce heat to low and simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf from sauce
- Cook lasagna noodles per package directions, drain in a colander
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a 13 by 9 inch baking dish, arrange half of the noodles, overlapping them as needed.
- Mix ricotta cheese with eggs in a small bowl. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles in baking dish. Sprinkle with one half of the mozzarella, and top with one half of the sauce. Repeat the layers. Bake in oven for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving
Notes
- Depending on the spice tolerance of your family, you can play with the proportion of ground beef versus sausage
